What are the Options for Maintenance Training?

Whether you run a small or large operation, your success depends on the best operation of each specific part and piece of the puzzle. In a factory, having a tiny part malfunction can shut down the entire assembly line. That means that the maintenance training of your staff is one of the most essential parts of your management model. Not everyone can be aware of each potential issue. However, having a well trained team in place can ensure that each part of the operation is being monitored by a qualified eye. What options do you have to get the best training for your team?

For the most personalized training program, you can hire a company who will come to your facility and do a period of maintenance training. This has several advantages. First, the training team will have access to your specific needs and be able to personalize the instruction accordingly. It is also less time consuming to train on site, as travel and lodging for your staff is unnecessary. This option is, however, the most expensive when it comes to up front cost. The shorter timeline, however, may make it more than worth it to you.

If you are sold on the idea of having a more hands on training experience, but don’t want to bring a dedicated training team to your facility, you may want to look at one of the maintenance training seminars that are available. These are usually quite affordable. You can either send your entire team, paying for travel and lodging, or you can send a handful of team members, who will then share what they learn with the remaining maintenance crew. There are pros and cons to both choices. You will likely make the decision based upon what your training budget is.

Finally, one of the easiest and most affordable ways to deal with the issue of maintenance training is to use a web based training program. This is the same curriculum that is offered at seminars, but it is delivered electronically. You can choose the training timeline that is most convenient for you, without interfering as much in normal operations. You do lose the ability to ask questions or interact with the instructor. However, these programs are well tested, and quite comprehensive. In addition, many programs allow to purchase a package that allows you train your entire maintenance team for one reasonable investment.
