Involvement In The Immigration Debate

For decades, now, the country has been divided over the issue of immigration, and there are many different organizations and people that have taken numerous actions to promote and support different sides of the issue. Groups like the Federation for American Immigration Reform, for example, have lobbied congress and published opinions to support more stringent restrictions on immigration. The Federation for American Immigration Reform has been accused of being an extremist organization, and certainly their support of a complete moratorium on all immigration is one of the things that has led to that claim. On the other side of the spectrum, though, there are other organizations that are calling for a complete amnesty for all illegal immigrants already in the country. There are a number of organizations that are calling for reforms that are a little less extreme than these two sides, but there will always be a large number of people involved in the debate. For an average citizen, though, getting involved in the debate isn’t always quite so easy. While many people have their own opinions on the subject (many of them fall in line with those other organizations) they often feel that they are not in a position to be actively do anything more than inundate friends and family with their opinions. Some will go as far as joining groups like the Federation for American Immigration Reform, while others will simply donate to the organizations of their choice. In the end, though, most people find that their level of involvement is directly related to how they are affected by the situation. Often, citizens who feel they have suffered because of unfair business practices directly tied to illegal immigration will have more motivation to get involved. At the same time, people and organizations that depend on the workforce will also be more likely to do something more active about the reforms. For now, though, the debate on the issue will continue to seek some kind of resolution.
