How to choose a smoke for newer cigar smokers
If you are prepared to join the ranks of cigar smokers, here is how it is possible to get started. The 1st step is choosing the right cigars to “practice” with. You must start by choosing one or two different single cigars at your local tobacconist. Do not purchase a box of cigars until you have sampled some singles, first. First, choose mild cigars. Black and Milds are commended for newbies, since the more full-flavored cigars would most likely taste too strong (or just plain bad) to a new smoker. Mild cigars are also the least expensive, so you won’t have to fret about ruining a costly cigar by lighting it wrongly, or by cutting too much off the closed end.
Second, inspect the cigar. Once you have determined which kind of cigar to buy, then gradually squeeze the cigar to establish if there are any hard or soft spots. You don’t wish to take a gamble on purchasing a cigar with a defective draw, or worse yet, one that is plugged and not smokeable. Tip: credible tobacconists will typically replace a plugged cigar. Also, examine the wrapper for cracks or blemishes.
Lastly, protect and smoke your cigar. If you do not yet own a humidor, don’t buy more cigars than you can smoke within a couple of days, and make efforts to leave them in their cellophane packaging (if dutch master cigars) until you’re ready to smoke. Never leave an unprotected cigar exposed to the elements, as it will quickly dry out. You can briefly store cigars in an air tight container or similar container.
