College Students: The Trade-Off Between Convenience and Chic

When going to school at University, there is little concern about fashion. Looking around at your peers, some practically arrive in last night’s pajamas and slippers if the class is early in the morning (it would seem sometimes!).

During the day this group of students change in to flip flops and a pair of comfortable (often very worn) jeans and a t-shirt. It’s not like they’re arriving in blouses, skirts and pashmina shawls.

Depending on one’s last haircut, this might also entail wearing a hat for males, or putting hair in a ponytail for females. It’s not that college students are unaware or uncaring about their appearance. It is however mostly due to the lifestyle on campus. It must be very casual due to the business with keeping up with school work, the lack of money, and trying to balance all this without sacrificing a social life.

All in all, it’s a fashion that fits in with the rest of the college peers, and it makes for efficiency. For instance button up shirts and dress pants often require ironing and the time needed to button up the shorts and tuck it in.

Shoes require both socks and the time spent lacing and tying them. Getting a good looking haircut sacrifices that needed money for beer runs, book supplies, and other school essentials. Another aspect of not wearing dress-up clothes on campus is simply that your mum isn’t there to help your laundry. Previous to college life, mum served as the go-to person for laundry washing. Often, living on campus is a student’s first experience away from home. So a student in this position probably does not have the skills to take care of nice looking clothes. It takes time to learn the proper setting for the washer, what and when to add the cleaner, and at what temperature items need to be dried. On the other hand, jeans, tee shirts and pajama bottoms all can be washed and dried on the same settings; they are made from versatile materials that serve that purpose.
